Highlights

Winter Solstice webcast and HD broadcast from New Grange
21 December 2008
IYA2009 national nodes all over the world are invited to participate with us in this moving and ancient spectacle, which occurs today, just as it did on the midwinter solstice all those years ago.

IYA2009 Ireland Node Launch at the BT Young Scientist's Exhibition 2009
6-10 January 2009
The BT Young Scientists Exhibition is a very large school science exhibition, in which school students from all over Ireland compete with science projects. BT Ireland have adopted astronomy as the theme of the exhibition, and we will launch IYA 2009 Irish activities at the event. ESO are bringing a major display, and we will also launch the "Faulkes Telescopes Universe Challenge" ("Dúshlán na Cruinne le Faulkes" in Irish) at the BT YS 2009.

"Faulkes Telescopes Universe Challenge" ("Dúshlán na Cruinne le Faulkes" as Gaeilge)
2-3 school students and a teacher will be invited to undertake, with professional help, an extended research project using the 2m Faulkes Telescopes in Hawaii and Australia. Project suggestions will be provided by the professional astronomical community in Ireland (postgrads, postdocs & staff). We hope that some, at least, of projects will be worthy of publication in some form.
