The International Year of Astronomy (IYA) has been proclaimed by the United Nations in December 2007.In Mauritius, the celebration of IYA is being coordinated through the Mauritian National Committee for the International Year of Astronomy under the chairmanship of Sarojiny Saddul-Hauzaree. The committee comprises of representatives from:
(i) Mauritius Institute of Education
(ii) Ministry of Education and Human Resources
(iii) Ministry of Tourism, Leisure and External Communications
(iv) Mauritius College of the Air
(v) Ministry of Environment and National Development Unit
(vi) University of Mauritius
(vii) University of Technology, Mauritius
(viii) Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre
(ix) The Mauritius Astronomical Society
and possible participation from :
(i) Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Senior Citizens Welfare & Reform Institutions
(ii) Ministry of Arts and Culture
(iii) Prime Minister's Office - Rodrigues & Outer Islands
(iv) Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade & Cooperation
(v) Ministry of Information Technology & Telecommunications
Major activities include:
(i) An international conference for small island states.
(ii) Various programmes on the Knowledge Channel.
(iii) A national project for astronomy for the visually-impaired.
